Gary Smith is a retired naval officer and has lived on and off in San Diego since 1970. He has been a downtown homeowner since 1985 (Park Row in the Marina Neighborhood) and a permanent resident since 1996. Currently he serves as President of the San Diego Downtown Residents Group (SDDRG).

Since its inception in 1987, the SDDRG, a 503(c) non profit, has been involved with community issues in all seven downtown neighborhood districts: Little Italy, Cortez Hill, Columbia /Core (& Core II), Marina, Gaslamp Quarter, Horton, and East Village.

The DRG provides a critical conduit and resources enabling downtown residents to participate on an "equal footing" on important political and community development issues. We represent the interests of residents, and not any other business or political organization.
